A Simple Guide to Parallel Parking

I hate parallel parking.  It’s never been my strong-suit, though usually I can do it OK.  My father, on the other hand, is like some freaky Jedi when it comes to doing this.

So here’s my father’s Seven Step Guide to Parallel Parking:

1. Turn on your turn signal.

2. Pull your car parallel to the car in front of the parking space, leaving around two or three feet of space between your car and the car next to you.

3. Turn your body around, holding the steering wheel with one hand and the back of the passenger’s headrest with the other.

4. Slowly reverse until you can see the rear bumper of the car next to you out the side of your vehicle (e.g. through the back seat’s side windows), then turn the wheel as far as you can towards the curb.

5. Once the rear bumper of the car next to you is aligned with your front door’s door handle, turn the wheel straight.

6. Once the rear bumper of the car next to you is aligned with your front door’s hinges, turn the wheel as far as you can away from the curb.

7. When the car is inside the space, straighten it up, and you’re done.

This is a video of a girl showing this method; the thing is, she has enough room to park a jumbo jet inside that open parking space – using a more precise method like my father uses will let you squeeze in to a much tighter spot.  And, for all her talk about turning on her turn signal…it’s never on, for the rest of the video.  Use your turn signals, people!
