There are lots of ways to do things, but I’m going to tell you the cheapest way from Hong Kong Airport into Hong Kong.
The most publicized way to go from Hong Kong Airport to Hong Kong is to take the Airport Express, a “high-speed” train that costs, depending on destination, HK$100, HK$90 and HK$60. Round-trip is only slightly cheaper: HK$180, HK$160, and HK$110.
It takes around 40 minutes to take the Airport Express to Central Station and will cost HK$100 (US$13).
It takes around an hour to use public transportation and costs HK$27.50 (US$3.50).
Really, the Airport Express amounts to a marginally faster trip and around the same amount of walking (as it’s a very long walk in Central Station to go from the Airport Express to the MTR), but it will cost you nearly four times as much money.
Here’s how it’s done:
The Cheapest Way from Hong Kong Airport into Hong Kong
Starting in Terminal 2, face the Airport Express platform.
Take a right and walk outside.
Be sure to take note of any signage for the S1 Bus.
Follow the signs.
Eventually you’ll get to the line for the S1 Bus.
Get on the S1 Bus.
Take the bus to Citygate.
Get off the bus and follow the MTR signs.
Find the entrance to Tung Chung Station and make your way into the city from there.
This is a pretty easy way to do it and significantly cheaper than opting for the Airport Express.
If it’s a business expense, take the Airport Express…but if you want to save some money, you can spend US$7 for a round trip using normal public transportation instead of spending US$25 for a round trip using overrated public transportation.
It’s only twenty bucks, but if you’re traveling on a budget, that may mean an extra night at a hostel; if you’re traveling with your family, this could knock $100 off your travel expenses.
Knowing the cheapest way from Hong Kong Airport into Hong Kong is important, but the most important thing to remember is: do not take a taxi!

I’m glad you mentioned CityGate. If you are a real cheapo, and want to save the bus fare, Novotel Citygate has a free shuttle from the HKG to their lobby. If you go when it’s busy, I bet you could exit the shuttle and walk right into the mall. I stay at Novotel Citygate every time I pass through HK just because of the free shuttle. (not to mention the nice hotel rooms and mall)
